Revenue Officer Called, What Should I Do Now?

What can I do if I get a notice or a phone call from a Revenue Officer?

Please keep in mind the reason the Revenue Officer wants to collect money for the IRS. That is their job and they are highly trained to do just that. The result may well be a levy on your bank account, your wages or the repossession of your real estate. They may already have a lien on your property.

The Revenue Officer generally is not aware of the IRS regulations and many times will ignore them to achieve their money collecting goals. They are not always truthful in what they say either and may try to trip you up by various questions to be used against you.

The worst thing you can do is to talk to them.

You may acknowledge their phone call and tell them you are obtaining representation. Don’t hang up or be rude either. After you obtain representation the Revenue Officer will possibly try to still contact you and tell you your representative is not experienced enough to handle the issue. If they call you after you obtain representation, simply inform them you have representation and to contact your representative not you.

While dealing with the Revenue Officer there will be requests for information that your representative will pass on to you. It is important to meet the deadlines for information. At times the deadlines are unrealistic and can’t be met. Your representative will inform the Revenue Officer of that fact and adjust the deadlines if possible. You will not be able to do that.

It must be pointed out that the Revenue Officers regularly transcend the IRS code. You will not know when they do so because you do not know the IRM (their manual). However, your representative will know the IRM and can bring the Revenue Officer in line by various means.
